AI Spoofed Call Detection: Why Local-Looking Numbers Slip Past Blocklists

Spoofing is the reason old-style call blocking stopped working. The caller ID you see is not tied to the phone that is actually calling, so a spammer can display any number they like: your area code, your bank, or a neighbor. A blocklist can only block the number it sees, and the number it sees belongs to someone innocent.

What about a real neighbor?

A prefix rule that matches your own prefix will also match a genuine neighbor calling for the first time. Two safeguards keep that from being a problem. First, anyone in your contacts or on the safe list is allowed before rules run. Second, choose voicemail rather than reject for prefix matches during the first week so a real person can still leave a message. Spoofed calls that borrow a name you trust

The most dangerous spoofed calls display the number of your bank, a government office, or a delivery company. No filter can promise to stop every one. The habit that does work: if a call claims to be from an institution and asks for a code, a password, a payment, or remote access, hang up and call the number printed on your card or statement.
