Bank and account alerts
A message claims your account is locked or a login was detected and asks you to tap through. Real institutions rarely put a login link in a text. Keyword filters catch the common phrasing.
Wrong-number openers
A friendly text that looks like it was sent to the wrong person is often the start of a longer scam. The number is new and the message is harmless on its face, so repeat-sender rules and review matter.
Group MMS blasts
Messages that add you to a group with strangers, or that carry an image and a short link, are common carriers of spam. MMS filtering handles these alongside plain SMS.
How text filtering fits the call-blocking stack
The same order applies. Senders in your contacts and safe list are always delivered. Blocked senders are filtered first. Then keyword-style filters look for the phrasing that spam texts reuse: package, toll, verify, suspended, claim, and short links with no context. Filtered messages are kept in a message log so a legitimate text can be recovered and the sender allowed.
Setting it up without losing real texts
- Grant the SMS permission the app requests. Text filtering cannot work without it, and Android may also ask about default messaging behavior.
- Add the numbers that send you legitimate codes and alerts to the safe list: your bank, pharmacy, school, and any two-factor services.
- Turn on filtering for blocked senders and the default keyword patterns.
- Check the message log after a few days. Allow anything real and add a keyword for any spam that got through.
Two habits that filtering cannot replace
- Never tap a link in an unexpected text, even one that gets through the filter. Open the app or website you already use instead.
- Never reply, not even with STOP, to a message from a number you do not know. A reply confirms the number is live.
